Getting Your Car's A/C Ready Before Summer at the Shore

By Shore Brothers Automotive, Cape May Court House, NJ · Published

The short answer

If your A/C blows warm, cools slowly or smells musty, have it checked in spring before the summer rush. Low refrigerant almost always means a leak somewhere, so a quick recharge without finding the leak usually only lasts weeks.

Signs your A/C needs attention

  • Air that's cool but not cold, or that takes a long time to cool the car down.
  • Weak airflow from the vents even on high.
  • A musty or sour smell when the A/C turns on.
  • Clicking, squealing or grinding when the A/C is running.
  • Water on the passenger-side floor.
  • Cold air that comes and goes.

Why a recharge alone usually isn't the fix

Your A/C is a sealed system, so it shouldn't lose refrigerant over time. If it's low, it's leaking. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak can get you cold air for a while, but it usually comes back.

A proper check measures the pressures, looks for leaks and confirms the compressor, fans and controls are all working, so you know what's actually wrong before paying for a repair.

A word about DIY recharge cans

Store-bought cans make it easy to overcharge the system, which can make cooling worse and strain the compressor. Many also contain leak sealers that can clog parts and contaminate shop equipment. Many newer cars use a different refrigerant (R-1234yf) than older ones (R-134a), so the wrong product won't work at all.

Easy things that help

  • Replace the cabin air filter. A clogged filter cuts airflow and can cause musty smells.
  • Run the A/C for a few minutes every couple of weeks, even in winter, to keep seals lubricated.
  • Keep the condenser in front of the radiator clear of leaves, sand and debris.

Why spring is the best time

Once the summer crowds arrive, every shop at the Shore gets busy with A/C repairs, and parts can take longer to get. Having it checked in April or May means you're cool by Memorial Day instead of waiting in July.
