Salt Air and Your Car: Keeping Rust Away at the Jersey Shore

By Shore Brothers Automotive, Cape May Court House, NJ · Published

The short answer

Salt from ocean air and winter road treatment speeds up rust underneath your car, where you can't see it. Rinsing the underbody regularly, fixing paint chips early and having brake lines, exhaust and suspension parts checked at every oil change catch problems while they're still cheap to fix.

Why Shore cars rust faster

Salt draws in moisture and keeps metal wet, and wet metal rusts. Near the ocean, salty air and spray settle on your car year-round, and New Jersey roads are treated with salt every winter. Cars that live in Cape May County get both.

Most of the damage happens underneath, on parts you never see: brake lines, fuel lines, the exhaust, suspension components and the frame or subframe.

Parts to keep an eye on

  • Brake lines: rusted steel lines can leak and cause a soft or sinking brake pedal.
  • Exhaust pipes, hangers and mufflers: rust shows up as new rattles or a louder exhaust.
  • Suspension parts and springs: corroded parts can crack or make clunking noises over bumps.
  • Rocker panels, wheel wells and door bottoms: bubbling paint is rust coming through from behind.
  • Battery terminals and electrical connections: corrosion causes hard starts and electrical glitches.

Habits that make a real difference

  • Rinse the underbody, not just the paint, every couple of weeks in summer and after winter storms. Many car washes offer an underbody spray.
  • Rinse right away after driving on the beach or through standing salt water.
  • Touch up paint chips and scratches before rust gets underneath.
  • Keep drain holes in doors and rocker panels clear so water doesn't sit inside.
  • Wax a few times a year to give the paint a protective layer.
  • Have the underside looked at during routine service. Catching a rusted brake line or exhaust hanger early is much cheaper than replacing a whole section later.

When to bring it in

Come in if your brake pedal feels soft, your exhaust gets louder or starts rattling, you hear clunks over bumps, or you see rust holes or flaking metal underneath. We'll put the car on the lift, show you what we find, and explain what's urgent and what can wait.
